Having just watched the Panorama episode about Connells' terrible business practice, it made me realise I should post a very late brief review of our experience buying from Connells and the particular issues with Wendy.
As shown in Panorama, they clearly give preferential treatment to buyers who are going to use their in-house services (mortgage advisor, solicitors, etc). Our experience included them telling us they couldn't accept our offer because we weren't getting a mortgage through them. They also refused to take the house off the market even after we had managed to get an offer accepted because we wouldn't have a meeting with their in-house mortgage broker.
We had the simplest of house purchases and they managed to make it so complicated and I remember Wendy laughing down the phone when I explained how incompetent they were.
There's more, but I'll leave it at that.

Oh, where do I even begin with Connells? My business partner and I had the audacity to look for a shop that wasn’t exactly your cookie-cutter retail space. You know, something "a little outside the usual." Shockingly, Connells didn’t bat an eyelid! They actually communicated with us (I know, unheard of, right?) and, brace yourselves, they were proactive. I mean, we didn’t even have to chase them what kind of real estate agent sorcery is this? They’ve gone out of their way to do everything possible to meet our needs. Highly recommend? Of course. They set the bar way too high for anyone else. Keep up the annoyingly stellar work, Connells Copthorne office! You're ruining the competition for us.

I am in Canada. As an executor for my brother's estate, I had to sell his Crawley UK property. I decided on Connells, Copthorne after meeting with Wendy Hicks of Connells and another estate agent. I and the other two executors decided on contracting with Wendy on 22 Jan after a telephone meeting in which she appears very engaged, very knowledgeable of the area and the market and understood the challenges we faced.
Through the sales cycle we interacted mainly with Wendy but also with Lindsay Randall and Suzanne Howarth. When I could not reach Wendy, Lindsay was very responsive and I was very satisfied with the responsiveness of everyone in the office with whom I had dealt. The advertisement of the sale began on 9 Feb 2024 after photos were taken on 4 Feb. Four viewings were booked for 10 Feb; we had to stop viewings after 19 Feb as we received an offer on 15 Feb and accepted the next day.
Although the chain was short - the buyer was selling to a first time buyer - completion was achieved only on 24 July 2024. THe five-month delay was mystifying until we learned that comprehensive supporting documents we had delivered through our conveyancer on 20 Feb had only been delivered to the buyer on 25 May, but this was not Connells' issue. In fact, after 25 May, Wendy became a key contact with the buyer and enabled a quicker turnaround for questions and concerns.
All in all, a very satisfactory outcome despite my 5,000 km distance. Very happy with the conduct of Wendy and her staff throughout the process. My emails were responded to on the same day usually despite the 5 hour time difference.

Whilst our property was being marketed by Connells. Connells arranged a viewing of our property for a couple that said they were cash buyers. Whilst viewing our property the prospective buyers burgled us stealing £5-£6000 of jewellery. Never at any time did we receive an apology from Connells they completely failed to take responsibility, completely brushing over the situation. Initially they would not provide the Police with the suspects details until Police threatened with a warrant. Eventually the branch manager contacted the head office who agreed to release the suspects details. We are now waiting to go to trial at Crown Court. Furthermore they valued our property at almost £1,000000 and after three months we were advised to reduce it to £850,000 The whole four months we were on with them was an utter shambles.

We viewed a property before the one we put an offer in with Connells. We was show not around by Ollie. He was very professional and friendly. It was a small if we new hi mate from old. He answered all our queries and if he couldn’t he wrote them down and came back to us with the answer. He nevertheless rushed us and Madeleine us feel important. We put an offer in straight away and he’s came back to us the next day with the answer we was hoping for.
We was then handed over to Wendy who was going to deal with our purchase every step of the way.
We had a difficult time BUT Wendy help make it as smooth as possible.
The issue was with solicitors and people in the chain. Wendy dealt with all our issues and chased them up to reach the final destination off a completion date. We felt we wouldn’t get there without Wendy she help and professionalism. I would use them a gain and really recommend them to any one. We used Connells Copthorne after a very lacklustre campaign with another agency. The impact was quite instantaneous!We had a flurry of viewings after a polished marketing listing. These "professionals" arranged an appointment with me.
Rang me before to confirm. I told them I was there 20 mins early in order to see what the area was like and told them to come down at any point. I got a confused response as though I was strange for wanting to be early.
They were late.
I left.
CANNOT KEEP A SIMPLE APPOINTMENT.
Then they blamed traffic - they live in Ashford and KNOW that the roads are nightmares in Ashford, and thus leave early for every appointment to take this into account. Thus they are poor at understanding the very area they rent in.
Then I wrote with my disappointment about this. And their SENIOR manager couldnt even get my name correctly despite having it written down for him in my emails....
Thus cannot READ.
So they cant keep appointments and cannot and do not care enough to even give you the respect of getting your name correct.
HIGHLY HIGHLY unprofessional just like 7 other letting agents in Ashford.

The property marketing commenced promptly.
The enquiry rate was good.
A sale was agreed without too much delay.
The staff did not stop there; they kept on top of the sale process.
Contracts are now exchanged and we move out in the new year.

I would like to highly recommend Connells in Copthorne - Wendy and her team have not only been extremely professional throughout the whole process of selling our family home, but helpful, supportive and proactive at all times. They have worked hard behind the scenes to keep the sale progressing smoothly, and have always kept us informed. Appalling Agency, avoid at all costs. They are not working for the seller at all. The staff are not fit for purpose. You will never be kept informed of the sale of your property. They send the most inappropriate people to your property. When questioned I was told by a member of staff they were not coping with the work whilst their boss was on leave... wth?? Not exactly a busy agency! Very poor service.

An absolutely disgraceful company. You are nothing to them. Please avoid for your own benefit, they are dishonest and their mortgage brokerage service is abysmal. Even their staff criticize their own company
