Carter Jones of York handled our rental application back in May 2023. The process itself was made all the more easier by their procedures which though complex at times in order to comply with government regulations, caused us no concerns whatsoever. Everything was explained very carefully and the move into our new apartment happened exactly as and when it was supposed to. We have nothing but praise for their looking after our interests, just as much as for those of the landlords. There have been some staff changes since May '25 but Grace stands out for her success in easing our way through the paperwork and into our new home. Presently and for some time now, our day to day contact is with Jess and occasionally, Jess who as far as we are concerned, are the go-to ladies on a day to day basis. They are always so courteous and friendly. The perfect people on the end of the phone when an emergency might occur by way of a leaking tap or unserviceable cistern. They quietly get on and resolve such problems with ease. And lastly but by no means least is David Sinclair whom I believe line manages the 3 ladies in question. Although we have had little contact with David, we know that he is also as team player and always ensures that procedures are followed. Clearly, there is more to his job specs than that but at holiday and other times, he ensures to inform us of who we might need to contact in an emergency, whilst the office is closed for the duration. We have nothing but praise for both the Letting Agency in general and most certainly, David, Grace, Jess and Sally in particular! Thank you all.

Kate Richards was with us through out the whole journey, from viewing to getting the keys. It took us about three months to finalise everything and Kate was always there for us ????

It's difficult to know where to start with regards to what went poorly working with Carter Jonas. Firstly, we thought that we were in good hands with Tony Wright given his more than 20 years with the company and in the industry, but he proved to be one of the most unprofessional individuals we've encountered in any capacity in any industry. As an example, in the span of 3 months, he went on holiday 3 times and not only failed to communicate this to us each time he went offline, but also on one of these holidays, we called him on the phone number he had provided us - not knowing he was away, which we would have respected, had we known - and his wife answered and rudely informed us that he was not available. Further on, he pushed us to accept an offer that was well below market value, did not get proof of funds from the supposed buyers and then expected us to immediately take the listing off of all websites. When we questioned this, he condescendingly said that "this is how it's done". Finally, from the beginning of this offer, he seemed to be more inclined to support the buyers' position and told us multiple times that they should not be put in a position of "risk", insinuating that it was fully acceptable that we, the sellers, take the listing offline and be content with the end-of-year timeline for exchange - more than 9 months away. There were more issues along the way, far too many to recount them all, but if you are looking for an estate agent that you can trust, this is not the one.

We arrived 10 minutes early for our scheduled viewing, only to be told by the agent that we could not get inside because the key did not work.
This was very disappointing, especially as we had made time to attend and were genuinely looking forward to seeing what could potentially be our new home. For a professional letting agency, it is concerning that access to the property was not arranged properly in advance.
The experience left us questioning the level of professionalism, and it certainly did not give us confidence in moving forward.

AVOID AT ALL COST ABSOLUTELY APPALLING. We have been treated terribly since day dot, they lied to us about our property and said all this work would be done and it never was. The property was filthy and unsafe, they took all our money and sent it to the landlord without our permission after we ended the tenancy. We delt with David Sinclair and the service is completely unprofessional and extremely rude, he took days and days to reply to us and always ignored my questions and was always sarcastic on the phone.

The WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Please avoid using Carter Jonas if you can. I have been using several letting agencies in York, but this is the worst experience that I have ever encountered. They will hold off your deposit and ask you pay for the irrelevant fee after check out. I was FORCED to pay for the painting and redecoration fee that is totally unacceptable.

I have had a brilliant service from Carter Jonas Team - Special thank you to David Sinclair for showing me my new home at a last minute request and amending my tenancy paperwork quickly, to Celine for liaising with referencing for a small hiccup, and Grace Wilson for her input throughout the process. Highly recommend avoiding Carter Jonas ( York ) we rented out our property with them and the lack of communication from the start was unbelievable. Not returning calls or answering questions sent by email, Didn’t even inform us of the entry date for the tenant ( we found out by accident ) and then when the tenant broke the conditions of the lease by moving additional people into our property without our permission they refused to support us the owners with serving the tenant an eviction notice. Having to now look into Legal action against Carter Jonas for failing to do the job they signed up for….

Carter Jonas are brilliant, they have gone above and beyond to help us get our first proper rented property. They answered all our questions and were really friendly and accommodating. I recommend Carter Jonas to everyone I speak to about moving house because they really were so very helpful. When we were struggling for ID as my partner had sent his driving license off they were ringing to check up on us to see how far we got and all the way till the day of collecting the keys they were patient and supportive unlike other estate agents we tried to go with.

Tenant: From start to finish Carter Jonas has been very professional, efficient and knowledgeable.
We enquired about the property, we viewed the property (they were fully booked though and had 13 viewings on this particular day). We liked the property that the landlord had to offer, we quickly made an application with no time wasted.
A very professional women called Grace came back to us asking a few questions for the landlord, then told us we had been approved. She kept us informed very and explained next steps perfectly to us using email. We used Blinc to check our credit files/confirm identity/confirm salary and this was a very effective way of doing it.
The next step is for Ken to meet us at the property on our moving date.
The full team has provided the adequate information throughout the last 4-6 weeks, especially Grace Wilson who handled everything for us and was our point of contact. She provided excellent customer service using great communication and written skills. She has a can do attitude to the approach of her work to ensure her clients needs are met and she’s definitely done this from the tenants side. Thank you Grace

Having moved to Carter Jonas from another Estate Agency upon where my property had been listed for almost 3 months and very little interest (or seem to be notified of), I was in hope of finding a much more proactive/motivated approach and I can safely say they did that, with an agreed sale price, exchange of contracts and out within 6 weeks I could not have been happier.
Infact, I have a number of other properties in which I will be instructing Carter Jonas too.
Lois Power specifically went out of her way in my personal opinion, working long hours and not having time through the day to respond to Lois’ emails, Lois went out of her way to respond after her working hours; showing her true dedication and an asset to Carter Jonas. Moving can be described as one of the most stressful events in one’s life but Carter Jonas take that stress away.

As a tenant I wouldn’t usually be minded to say kind things about a lettings agent. However the staff at the Micklegate office were all professional, courteous, and helpful. They do the simple but important things well: respond promptly to voicemails and emails, and always arrive on time to viewings (a lot of lettings agents can’t say that!). Keep doing what you’re doing.

I have just finished renovating a house and was undecided whether to rent out the house and live in my flat, or vice versa. Needing to discuss the various options and costs with a professional agent, I was referred to David Sinclair at Carter Jonas upon personal recommendation. Turns out it was an excellent recommendation! David immediately viewed both of my properties and took the time to discuss with me in detail both my requirements and my situation. He gave thorough, considered advice and made a very careful effort to tailor Carter Jonas's services accordingly. He quickly booked an excellent photographer for one of the properties and the office posted a beautiful advert. Viewings were immediate and by the Monday immediately following the first weekend's viewings, the property was reserved for incoming tenants. David took care to ensure that references were secured as quickly as possible and my communications with him were consistently excellent. David has done a superb job and I shall be very happy to work with him again in the future.

I’m really disappointed... there have been 2 properties I’ve wanted to view and I’ve called numerous times and left messages for the rural team to call me back to arrange viewings.
I’ve never had a call back and no one in the non-rural ream would help....I would imagine they would all have access to the same information? If not I suggest they do!
One of the properties was a £1000 per month rent and has been advertised for longer than you’d expect - does the landlord know it’s probably because no one gets back to them to arrange a viewing?
I would imagine they make a commission when letting a property? Shame they don’t want to make money. I guess Jonathan must be smashing his targets so doesn’t need to successfully rent another property?

I found the staff at Carter Jonas - York to all be very knowledgeable, curteous and friendly.
It’s a stressful time securing all the paperwork and ensuring everything runs smoothly and Lois was brilliant in keeping us updated on how things were progressing - at times, more so than our own estate agents/solicitors. So much so that next time we move it will be with and through Carter Jonas.
Another key selling point for them was how knowledgable Keith, the chap who showed us around the property, was.
He answered our questions and if he didn’t know the answer he admitted it and then went away and found out for us - very impressive!!
All in all a 5-star service and experience.

I view many properties through many ages when relocating to York. As I was moving from London, it was often tricky, and a bit stressful at times.
Holly at Carter Jonas has been amazing. Understanding my preferences, negotiating with landlords, driving me to viewings and even doing me Skype viewings when I couldn't get there.
They were by far the best agency I dealt with, and when I buy a property in York myself to rent out, I will go to them!

Outstanding service from Louise Hirst, at Carter Jonas - York, and a delight to deal with. Louise sold our house in no time at all, after other agents had failed. Impressive from the outset, Louise personally oversaw the sale, right through to completion, even though she has the support of a first rate team. I never had to progress chase once (how often can one say that when dealing with professionals on the frustrating business of buying and selling residential property?). Exchange of contracts within 7 weeks and completion one week thereafter. I would have no hesitation in recommending Louise or Carter Jonas.

Frustrating and hampered by the representatives lack of relevant knowledge. Generally negative attitude towards prospective tenants.
Carter Jonas have a rather demeaning approach to tenant selection. They run a beauty parade. You need to pay to enter the competition.
If you fail the credit checks you get a refund.
If you are not selected for the short list you get a refund.
If you are not chosen by the landlord you get a refund.
If you voluntarily drop out you DO NOT get a refund.
Be careful of this last one. Even if you change your mind it would be cheaper to be rude to the landlord rather than come clean and admit you no longer want the property. Even if, just for example, you decided you had little faith in the agents commitment to refurbish the property to minimal habitation standards, remove the bee nest, fix the leaking roof, fix the eye-watering stench in the lounge and put the doors back on. Even then, you are still not going to get a refund.
