I had a wonderful experience renting a flat through Maxwells Estates. Over the few years we lived there, Amar, our main contact, was exceptionally professional and approachable, making the whole process feel smooth and straightforward. Whether it was answering questions or guiding us through paperwork, Amar was always attentive and easy to reach, which eased a lot of the usual stresses that come with renting.
Maxwells Estates clearly values good communication and support, and that made a big difference in feeling confident and well taken care of as tenants. Their approach goes beyond just business—it felt personal and respectful throughout our lease.
Overall, I would highly recommend Maxwells Estates to anyone looking for reliable and friendly property management. We had a very disappointing experience with Maxwell Estates regarding a property they manage on Petherton Road.
The process felt poorly managed and lacking transparency from the outset. We were not invited to formally submit an offer (as is common practice with many agencies) but were asked to pay a holding deposit in order to proceed, even before being able to properly discuss move-in dates or potential repairs. There was limited opportunity to ask questions about the property before being asked to commit financially.
After paying the holding deposit, passing all referencing checks, and providing additional information when requested, we received the tenancy agreement along with documentation that included an Electrical Installation Condition Report dated 2019 (by law this needs to be updated every five years) and a gas safety certificate that was expired.
We raised a reasonable request for confirmation of an up-to-date EICR, as this is a legal requirement before a tenancy begins. After several days without clear communication, and less than a week before our agreed move-in date, we were informed that the landlord would no longer proceed.
By that stage, we had already arranged movers and furniture deliveries, which the agency was aware of. The late withdrawal left us in a very difficult position with limited time to secure alternative accommodation.
We acted in good faith throughout the process, remained patient, and were ready to proceed with signing and transferring funds. Unfortunately, the way the situation was handled caused significant stress and disruption.

Terrible agency. I was in the property for 6 months with; Rat issues, house falling apart and just absolute disgust. I was being forced out of the property, even though I paid till a set date. I was argued with why I didn’t leave earlier if I wasn’t there. (My stuff was still in the room and I paid till that date). A housemate was extremely aggressive, taking ceiling lights down and slamming doors. Which I have documented and showed to an agent called Khalid, he was then very sexist and rude, after showing him videos of the other tenants aggressive behaviour. He sided with the aggressor of course. I have all emails and videos of the unprofessional and diabolical behaviour. DO NOT rent with this agency. Photo below is the smallest issue, however Google does not let videos be posted.

I had a genuinely positive experience living in a property managed by Maxwells Estates. From the beginning, the team was professional, responsive, and easy to communicate with. Any maintenance issues that came up were addressed promptly, and they made sure the property was well looked after throughout my tenancy. The move-in and move-out processes were smooth and straightforward, with clear communication every step of the way. It was reassuring to rent from an agency that clearly values both their properties and their tenants. I’d happily recommend them to anyone looking for a hassle-free renting experience.

Scammers! I cannot recommend you use a different agency more. I lived in a house share for 2 months, during which time I cleaned the garden and the whole flat because I wanted a nice space to live in, despite it only being a short let. They then tried to charge me £250 for cleaning when I left. Fortunately they were not able to action this, but others may not be so fortunate. At the end of my 2 month tenancy they were going to refurbish the house so I’m unsure why they’d need to clean it anyway.
The existing house mates informed me they were in the process of taking legal action because Maxwells had been letting the property without an in date gas safety certificate.
One of the bathrooms had a broken shower and toilet for the entire time I was renting and despite being reminded this was never fixed.
If you are thinking about renting through Maxwells, please reconsider because I have never had such negative dealings with a letting agent.

Great experience with Maxwells Estates. All their personnel are responsive, professional and polite. They were quick to respond to any issues with the property and fix expeditiously.
A very special thanks to Lucy who has gone out of her way, on several occasions, on matters that aren't even part of her department, excellent service.

Just moved into a house share run by Maxwell estates. I dealt with Danyal who could of not been more helpful to me. I needed to move as soon as possible and he made it happen! Everyone at the agency seemed extremely friendly. Danyal manages our house and keeps in contact about new people moving in and electric and gas for us. Couldn't ask for a better agent would highly recommend!

I'm a landlord and Maxwells are my letting agent. It is more of a partnership really and based on trust . Amar and his team work very hard to keep everything working for all parties but the key is great communication and openness, it is a personal service and that sets it apart from other agents I have worked with. I really recommend him to you if you are considering letting your property. What you see is what you get and they team are all very friendly and professional. Amar and his team manage to keep voids very low or nil but are also good at listening to and responding to tenants needs. Thanks to the whole team for their great work

Maxwells Estates are the worst estate agent I've had the displeasure of dealing with. They let a rat infestation sit for six months before claiming it was solved (summer, so they left because it's warm outside).
Khalid is obnoxiously rude, and lacks a basic understanding of the law. The admin staff are unhelpful. The entire company takes days to respond to emails, and they're riddled with spelling errors, omissions and innaccuracies when they do eventually respond.
I should also add that they had installed an electricity meter illegally, as confirmed by UKPN, and attempted to blame me (the tenant, who moved in when the meter was installed).
Run for the hills.

Bullying tactics, including verbal threats when tackling Maxwell’s lack of willingness to deal with outstanding issues (was without heating for 5 months)
Cowboy maintenance carried out by non qualified staff.
Currently under investigation by Hackney council for said negligence

Im an old tenant me and my partner rented a flat from Maxwells and we have enjoyed every bit of ourr stay. Just like to thank you Maxwells staff the Admin girl sahhaa she so nice and explained and helped us over the phone and replied to emails asap. Also would like to thank you the letting agentt at maxwells very nicee man showed the property and was verry professional and requested the landlord for some things for us to be moved. Definitley wouldd recommend maxwells as their customer service is good and admin fee and reference fee is fair price. Xxx

The staff at maxwells are all proffesional and helpful .I enjoyed my stay at the property i rented, i would definetley recommend them ,There admin and referencing fee are fairly priced not like other lettings there charge more. We stayed in our property for three year’s with Maxwells and it was a perfect experience. We were flexible tenants who looked after our property over the three years at our own expense within reason.
Personally our agent Amar was an amazing agent!! Our agent was always available for us, any issues we needed were always dealt with. He was friendly and easy to talk to.
The fees were fair compared to other popular agencies who massively overcharge.

Unprofessional staff and extremely poor communication.
The staff asked me personal questions which seemed irrelevant when simply enquiring about a property. Especially as I had not been asked such questions by other agencies, at least until the offer was accepted.
I arranged a viewing and did not receive a call back or a confirmation email. When I reached the property, no one turned up from the agency. I left several voicemails as well but did not hear back or even get an apology.
