This review concerns my former landlord, Anthony De Lacey, whose property I rented through Newfield Estates. My experience was extremely distressing and demonstrates serious misconduct and unsafe living conditions.
The landlord was verbally abusive, unprofessional, and discriminatory. He repeatedly harassed me to the point of tears, questioned my intelligence and sanity, made ableist comments, accused me of faking my disability, telling me to to “grow up” once I disclosed it. He made personal inappropriate comments, was sexist, and created an environment where I felt unsafe expressing my identity as an LGBT+ tenant.
He repeatedly entered the property without notice, which is illegal; I only discovered this via security cameras I had to get due to feeling unsafe. He also insisted on coming monthly, which is not allowed. He came to inform me he intended to evict me just before Christmas, was extremely verbally abusive, and left me in tears. A Section 21 “no-fault” eviction notice was issued in the new year.
The property was in severe disrepair. One wall was made of chipboard. Glass was smashed in a window when I moved in. The house was thick with dirt, dust, and cobwebs and infested with spiders, woodlice, and slugs. I would get piles of woodlice daily. He dismissed these issues, telling me to “embrace nature.” There was severe mould, damp, cracks, leaking ceilings, and fallen roof tiles. Windows were in poor condition and he refused to replace them unless I agreed to an illegal rent increase.
The boiler, dating from 1997, broke down repeatedly, rattled constantly, and was extremely expensive to run. Almost everything in the house either broke or was breaking during my tenancy, requiring repeated repairs. It was so cold inside I could see my breath, yet he refused to do anything about mould, instead instructing me to leave windows and doors open in winter.
He treated me with contempt and rudeness, laughed at the issues in the property, questioned my sanity, and refused to deal with repairs. He also frequently complained about past tenants. Neighbours later confirmed that the property had a very high turnover rate.
A medical professional has confirmed that I developed PTSD as a direct result of this experience, and I frequently experience flashbacks. I have extensive photo and video evidence documenting the damage, disrepair, infestations, and unlawful conduct. Most photos were taken on move in
The landlord and the agency failed to provide safe, habitable accommodation and allowed harassment, discrimination, and illegal conduct to continue. Tenants deserve lawful, respectful treatment and a secure home — none of which was upheld here.

Newfield Estates recently sold my late Mum’s house for us. We met with Tom in May before we put it on the market to get a rough idea of value and discuss any work that might need doing. His market knowledge about the Newton Hall estate is incredible and he gave us honest feedback and suggested next steps. He discussed what work might improve the property and aid the sale and what not to do as well.
When it was ready to go up for sale we met again with Tom and another local estate agent. Again he impressed us with his friendly matter, straight talking and honesty. His fees are easy to understand and with no hidden extras.
My brother and I as executors of Mum’s will both live out of the region. This was not an issue for Tom and his communication was excellent. The simple solution of setting up a what’s app group between the three of us kept us abreast of any viewings or offers through messages and calls. He priced the house well and we received an offer within the first week. We had a target completion goal of ‘before Christmas’ - the other local estate agent said that wouldn’t be possible and we should plan for February. Thanks to Newfield Estates and a bit of good luck we just completed on 12th December. He managed the process from start to finish and the single point of contact made everything easy.
Tom is absolutely the best estate agent I have ever used, not being from the area I just wish he had offices nationwide so I could use him again! Not only does he do his job well but the level of personal service means it’s done wit, warmth, respect and kindness! Can’t thank Newfield Estates and Tom enough! Just the best of the best!

Horrific. We made the mistake to believe the face that they show, and we trusted them. They cost us thousands, lied, gas lit and did everything to ensure that their business looked good. They took advantage of our vulnerable life situation (family health, death and the priorities in the vulnerable) if i had of died, which seemed to be their hope (as they kept offering very low value for our property) they conned us to rent it out, to someone we believed cared for it and they trashed it. We paid Newfields alot of money, to suffer alot of pain and heartache. We got the tenants out and sold the property within weeks of changing estate agents. GO elsewhere, these guys have vile ethics and are not compassionate or humane (unless they are going to gain)

One of the least painful and stressful sales/purchases I have ever experienced. Newfields staff were always there to help out with any queries or concerns. If I ever move again I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

We recently sold our family home of 28 years through Newfield. Tom, the Director, was very helpful throughout. Pre-marketing, he helped us identify and prioritise things to be done prior to putting the property on the market. The property is a bit of a one-off and Tom's research and advice on marketing and the asking price was sound. The property sold quite quickly but Tom kept us informed throughout the lengthy conveyancing process and offered good advice on the offers we received. One piece of real added value was that he stepped in directly with our buyers to help both sides get through a last minute hitch two days before completion. We have sold other properties in Durham in the past few years and our recent positive experience with Newfield was in marked contrast to that with some of the other local agents. My wife and I are both fully satisfied with the service we have received from Newfields and are happy to recommend them to others.

Wasted my time and bare faced lied to me. I had a flat view booked this morning and apparently I was the first one booked in and this was the first available appointment. Then when I rang this morning to confirm r time they said they had sold it last Thursday and thought they’d phoned me. Liars. But hey 4 other people were also turned down apparently look on the bright side. I don’t appreciate having my time wasted , being lied to or patronised. Not happy.
