Absolutely shocking. We put forward an offer on a property. We received a call to say that if we increased it, it would be accepted and that the seller was happy for it to be ours. We put forward the new offer and when we asked the estate agent whether this would be accepted, they said yes and told us to send over the relevant documents. Not even one hour later, we received a call to basically tell us that we had been gazumped. Apparently another offeree had put forward an offer which was ‘a lot higher’ than ours and the seller had accepted this. When we asked how much more this new figure was, the estate agent actually laughed down the phone and said ‘I can’t tell you that.’ I understand that you couldn’t tell us the figure, but you didn’t need to laugh and be rude, especially after you had wasted our entire day and got our hopes up. A bit of advice for you: if you’re aware that the seller is going to consider other offers and potentially accept a higher one, don’t tell the ‘original’ buyer in the first place that their offer has been accepted and that the seller is willing to let them have the property. Just be honest and have a bit of compassion.

I selected Gascoigne Halman, Altrincham as they had been the estate agent that had sold my previous house a number of years previously under a very difficult climate. In the current sale, my sales negotiator was Joanne Diggines who very calmly and professionally managed the sales process. A number of issues came up with the property that needed to be addressed and Jo managed very effectively the communication between the buyer and myself throughout the whole process culminating in a successful sale. If you’ve ever heard people complain about estate agents and thought, “they can’t be that bad,” you’re right. They can be worse. Meet Gascoigne Halman. If I could give them zero stars, I would - one is too good for them.
Our experience began pleasantly enough. A friendly agent confidently told us we could achieve far more for our property than we’d expected. We delayed listing for a short period, during which there were plenty of market changes. When we were ready to go live, we raised concerns about the proposed asking price, given those changes. We were reassured, again confidently, that it was still a smart price to list at.
It wasn’t.
The property attracted no interest whatsoever and sat idle for weeks. When we reached out for advice, the response was predictable but dissapointing. Reduce the price.
So we did. And then we did it again. And again. Over the course of our relationship with Gascoigne Halman, their only piece of advice when the property failed to sell was to reduce the price. In total, we reduced it four times, eventually knocking £40,000 off the original asking price.
We repeatedly asked for practical guidance. What could we improve? What might be putting buyers off? Could we at least refresh the listing photos so it didn’t look stale to the market? The agent “failed to see what this would achieve.”
That response neatly summed up the experience.
Beyond pricing conversations, we had almost no meaningful interaction with the original agent at all. Day-to-day communication was handed off to a rotating cast of five or six junior agents, none of whom showed much interest, urgency, or professionalism. One was so late to a viewing that we ended up conducting it ourselves. This same agent also received a cancellation of a 10am viewing at 3pm the day prior, but failed to inform us until 9:15am the next day! We have lives and a baby, we'd woken up early to prepare the house for a viewing that wasn't going to take place, all the while the agent KNEW and failed to inform us.
In total, we had over twenty viewings and not a single offer. The only “interest” Gascoigne Halman managed to generate came from complete time-wasters.
Throughout the painfully long period our property was listed with them, we repeatedly raised concerns. Each time, we were met with the same vacant response. No opinion or advice or independnet thought. Just “try reducing the price.”
Meanwhile, properties in our immediate area, clearly of a lower standard than ours, smaller and less modern, were selling. Gascoigne Halman couldn’t begin to explain why.
To be clear, we would have welcomed honesty. If something was genuinely wrong with the house, if the kitchen needed ripping out or the layout didn’t work, we wanted to know. At least then we’d have had something concrete to act on. Instead, we were offered nothing but an endless loop of price reductions.
Eventually, we gave up and switched to another agent, Kirn. The contrast was embarrassing. They gave us practical advice that was quick and inexpensive to implement. They clearly explained what was wrong with the existing photos. The difference in marketing was night and day. They priced the property competitively and explained the market conditions behind that decision. Most importantly, they actually seemed to want to sell our home.
It sold within two weeks. At the very price we had originally hoped to achieve with Gascoigne Halman.
The conclusion is unavoidable: The problem was never the house, it was the agent.
I will add one caveat. Near the end, a new member of staff, India, briefly took over our account after we had already given notice. I believe this was her first job and she was quite inexperienced. Despite that, she was polite, professional, and demonstrated communication skills far beyond anyone else we dealt with at the company. She was the sole bright spot in an otherwise dismal experience, which is, frankly, a damning indictment of the rest. I sincerely hope she finds a better place to work.

I had a very disappointing experience buying through the Altrincham office, which would put me off using them again in the future. The whole process took 7.5 months and, while the delays were not Gascoigne Halman’s fault, the way the situation was handled made the experience extremely negative. I was made to feel as though I was in the wrong for asking for clarity by Gascoigne Halman ( Missing documents, lease info, incorrect parking space talked about for months) , and I felt pressured to complete even though my solicitors were advising me not to, i.e. I was called. at 3.45 on Friday saying that if I didnt complete by EOD the seller would put the house on the market. At this point we discrepencies between the sellers documents and the land registry . Overall, this resulted in a very unpleasant experience as a first-time buyer.
Even on the day I collected the keys, there was no congratulations from Gascoigne Halman, one agent would not even pick up her head, and the agents seems to purposely not put the bottle of Prosecco normally given, which further tainted what should have been a positive moment. Their lack of knowledge about the property was also concerning—particularly as I had viewed another property in the same block with Thornley Groves, who were extremely knowledgeable.
I was also unhappy with the way I was treated personally. On one viewing, when I asked to view the property with only the agent present so I could talk freely ( Property was empty with nobody living in it ), I was made to feel uncomfortable by a member of staff who I felt encouraged the seller to attend instead, stay and did not like me asking questions. After completing and receiving the full email records (accidentally to my solicitor ), I discovered this had been done deliberately, with the suggestion that having the seller present “might make me complete quicker,” despite the fact that we were still missing the full and complete lease at that point.
I would not recommend this agent to first-time buyers, as the way my purchase was handled completely tainted what should have been an exciting experience.

This is a review I have been meaning to write since we completed on our sale and purchase in October 2024. We bought and sold via Gascoigne Halman. I have had time to reflect so this review is considered.
We were downsizing and our house was put on the market at a price we were comfortable with. The brochure and photography were superb. We had no amendments to make. We had four bids at the asking price within a fortnight then a best bids process. This is a significant skill to a) get the price right to attract interest and b) direct the process to get market value.
Kate and the team handled all the viewings professionally and willingly giving clear communication throughout. Rob also was involved as necessary, with clear feedback/guidance. Rob then handled the negotiations personally, approaching agents/lawyers up and down the chain throughout an unnecessarily extended period.
The lawyers were the weakest link (not ours) - that element of the process needs a fundamental overhaul. People do not pay enough for the legal service and are then surprised by inadequate performance by poorly trained, weak communicators with little genuine desire to see transactions conclude and provide proper professionalism.
Conversely, we cannot compliment highly enough the team at Gascoigne Halman for their service. Absolutely excellent at every stage and value for money. A pleasure to do business with them. They are outstanding and fully deserve the success they achieve and the comments posted.

I've sold my property not long ago and Kate and Robert had helped me so much through the process as it was my first time. They kept me informed in every detail and went above and beyond when I emailed asking the most pointless questions ????
Even after I sold the property, the new owners kindly passed on some letters of mine I hadn't changed details over of yet and Kate kindly forwarded those letters to my new address with no hassle.

Unprofessional to the highest level and very rude in my 6 years as an investor buying and selling I have never experience estate agents like them. Why are they still trading is beyond me or why would someone use them? All reviews say the same issue of unprofessional rude treatment might be part of their training

GH Altrincham owed me £80 at the end of tenancy and confirmed over the email to refund it back, it's been 5 months now but still they haven't paid me back. They would give vague responses over the call/email every time, but never interested in resolving the matter. I would not recommend using this agency in Altrincham !!!

Completed my purchase of the property in Altrincham in June 2021 during busy times with stamp duty holiday and Covid etc. - although the property purchase took much longer than expected but this was not due to Gascoign Halman team at Altrincham office. Full marks to the GH team for responsiveness and trying to chase the other side and closing out the matters. Will use again, thanks to Kate S for finding us the right property, Adam to agree the price, Kate M to follow up with most of the process and then Mike at the end to push it over the line. Thanks to all and will use the service again.
One thing that could be improved as a suggestion is to be liaise with both the buyer and seller in regards to setting some timescales and targets to achieve and then monitor those to make sure that sales are completed within timeframe. Just a suggestion for future, not a negative remark at all.

Doggy agency you should stay away from at all costs. They are probably useful for greedy landlords who want to sell their houses overpriced & with no morals, but considering the marginal price difference this agency can make between a legitimate sale and a dodggy one, it is NOT worth it!! They allowed one of their clients gazump us on a house after we spent a fortune on solicitor fees, surveyor costs, etc. They said it was a private sale but we recently found from other people that 'gazumping' is their usual practice! Be warned, on top of bidding wars you would have to get through gazumping wars with this agency. Our case is with ombudsman now.

AVOID AVOID.pathetic service , they work for the landlords only , not for the tenant .we spent 1year + in a house at Timperly and not even a single issue has ever been resolved by Gascogen . we moved into the house with a washing machine full of mold , (we didnt know we had to open the washing machine and check every part before signing contract )requested to change it , but got refused ,we bought our own , and now when we are moving out, we are told that landlord is now going to buy new one for upcoming tenant ,so we donot need to fit the old one back before we leave.i wonder how landloard (being a doctor ) was using that washing machine .
refrigerator stopped working within 3 days of moving .
there was a filthy pond that needed cleaning but landloard and company refused to do it , we literally had a fight to get it done ,as we were told house will be cleaned before we move in .i wish there was an option of 0 star .

Not even worth 1 star rating. Very unprofessional agents who were very rude and unhelpful. Manager was nasty and an argumentstive b****. Would never reccomend this company as we were fulfilled with false promises from the start. Property was a mess and filthy on move in day (baring in mind me have a 6yo child). Mould and dampness throughout which was repeatedly reported and never dealt with during 12 month tenancy. Better off being homeless!

AVOID AVOID AVOID. Sold us a house with carpet beetle infestation urine soaked carpets leaking plumbing non of which were noticeable on viewing but were issues that should have been sorted out before completion with the previous owner. Confirmed other issues such as dodgy bathroom lighting and damage to an internal door had been resolved when they had not. Inn accurate misleading write up online. Did not want to accept any liability after completion. Manager advising instead to go to small claims rather than mediate with previous owner. REALLY REALLY AVOID.

Don't expect to get all your deposit back when you leave rented property (no matter how good a job you do), they will find something!!
