I enquired about a rental property and I was told that I wasn’t going to be a suitable tenant based on my age and because I have children. I note that both of these factors are directly or indirectly to protected characteristics and this represents discrimination in breach of Pointens’ obligations under the Equality Act 2010. Further I note that this conduct in relation of tenant screening is due to become directly unlawful under the new laws coming into force on 1st May 2026, so for tenancies starting on or after 1st May which the one I enquired about likely would, this is questionably unlawful now.... So , the estate agent acted for the vendor, I was a cash buyer and had no agent. Late in the process ie 4 months after my offer was accepted, I became aware that my urgency to complete the purchase was not fully appreciated. I then contacted Joanne Lobb who was able to intervene with solicitors and push the process through, to my joy and relief. I felt she had become my best ally.... Read more
