7th Aug 2026 (16 days ago)Tried to rent a property, but the Lettings Negotiator was unable to prepare the Tenancy Agreement in a timely manner, and even then expected us to give notice on our current tenancy before signing the new tenancy agreement with them. After missing the first cut-off date that we told them we would need to sign the tenancy agreement by, they then had another 4 weeks to prepare the tenancy agreement, but were once again unable to do so in a timely manner. The Lettings Negotiator blamed this on the landlord not replying to her emails. Did you not think to phone and find out an answer over the phone? The result is our tenancy application was declined. What an absolute waste of time this was. Thankfully, I have obtained details of the landlord and will be advising her of the true reasons for the continuous delays in this process that ultimately led to our applicaton being declined.<br><br>They use Homelet to run the reference checks, which took over 2 weeks to complete. This was also part of the delay. If you are self-employed or Homelet have to complete any manual human checks, then expect long delays. I sent multiple messages to Homelet and made multiple phone calls, but they did not reply to any of my messages. This is a service chosen by Robinsons, therefore Robinsons has to accept responsibility of the fact that Homelet is a very poor and slow service. I will never use any estate agents that uses the Homelet service in the future.
2nd Mar 2019 (7 years ago)We are student at Durham University and we decided to rent a house. I called the estate agent and they agreed to send us the agreement and everything to rent this one house that we really liked. We were supposed to arrive a week later to submit the forms and pay deposit. When I got the papers, they confirmed with us that the house would be definitely be reserved for us. However, the morning we were supposed to hand in the papers, I got a short, badly articulated email saying that the property was no longer available and that we should look somewhere else. No explanation, nothing. We were angry because student accommodation is competitive and we lost so much time waiting for this house. Upon emailing them multiple times, they finally said that the previous tenants decided to stay for another year. Didn’t they confirm with the current tenants that they would be moving out? Why would they even list the house if that was an option? .Why send us the agreements and everything? They didn’t even bother trying to find us other options that we could stay at instead. All and all, I would never use this agent again because their service is absolutely terrible

She responded promptly to my inquiries and made a significant effort to ensure that the process ran smoothly. I am very pleased with the overall experience at Dowen, particularly with Caroline's assistance. It was an outstanding experience.

29th May 2026 (12 weeks ago)Awful experience from day one. Lesley came to me with a tenant who moved in October 25. First off they allowed a tenant to move in with no months rent up front - never agreed with myself. 7 months later I am still a month behind on unpaid rent even though I have emailed Lesley directly every month chasing. Peter Clark received the keys back to the property on 15/05 and I’m still yet to receive the months rent I’m owed. To add to this there wasn’t a single month where the rent was paid on the date stated on the agreement and instead they allowed the tenant to pay them with cash each month.

We approached 3 agents and chose Tom at Newfields who was very sensitive to the situation as well as professional, dealing with all queries promptly and efficiently. He kept us fully informed and managed the sale effectively achieving a good price within a reasonable timescale.<br>I can really recomend Tom and Newfield Estates.

All staff were very professional throughout and more than helpful with general queries. I especially felt listened to by Emma who really guided me through the sales process regarding time frames and next steps. Emails were answered promptly, communication was clear and I felt reassured that the team managed our sale well throughout. A very successful outcome and a big thank you.

14th Aug 2026 (9 days ago)We lived in a 3 bedroom house in Durham for over 3 years and Evenmore is one of the most incompetent and unprofessional companies I have ever encountered. I would recommend avoiding them as a letting company at all costs. We had multiple times things break and not only did they fail to communicate timeframes or expectations but left us in limbo without a washer or an oven for multiple weeks. They never told us the exact expectations for property inspections, but we thought we were doing fine when for two years our reviews never flagged any issues. Midway through our tenancy they changed who inspected the property and said we were failing to comply with the terms of the lease. They attempted to blame us even though these expectations were never communicated to us and our past inspections were fine. They even made passive aggressive comments to my wife about the house looking “disgusting” and “smelly.” We have two toddlers so that was the tommie tippie. This was a part of a pattern of making insensitive and unprofessional comments about us and lacked any care for us as the tenant. We got locked out of our kitchen and no one picked up their emergency line and so we had to wait for a day to get in our kitchen. Moreover, when we were leaving they scheduled appointments without our knowing and entered the home with prospective tenants while my wife was in the shower and our son was sleeping in his room. They blamed it on a technical error. They again, took no accountability for their own mistakes and unprofessionalism. When we exited the property we payed 400 in expert cleaners to come and clean the whole property. They took all of our deposit back saying they had to spend hundreds in house cleaning. They are only concerned to cover up their own failures to communicate and care for the tenant. If I was a landlord and knew how poorly they communicated with their tenants I would have serious reservations about using them to manage my property. Expats beware.

15th Jul 2025 (1 year ago)Overpromised, Underperformed and Untrustworthy – My Costly Mistake with HSD I initially listed my property with PurpleBricks in March 2025 for £535,000. After limited viewings over a three-month period, I began exploring other options and submitted an enquiry to WeBuyAnyHouse. They quickly came back with an offer of £460,000—roughly 14% below asking—claiming it would allow for a quick sale. I immediately declined, as I was not in a rush and didn’t want to take such a significant loss. Shortly after, my details were apparently passed on to House Sales Direct (HSD), seemingly a sister company, without my explicit consent. HSD came across as professional and engaging at first. They promised a 98% success rate in selling properties within 28 days, citing a strong network of pre-approved buyers and investors who could complete within 6–8 weeks. They suggested a sale price spread of £510k–£535k, assuring me they would work to get me the best price possible. It sounded promising. Based on these assurances, I decided to proceed with HSD. I withdrew my PurpleBricks listing—costing me £300—with the understanding that HSD’s investor network would accelerate the sale. But things quickly began to unravel. Despite supposedly having investors lined up, HSD said they needed to relist my property on Rightmove first. When I questioned why investors couldn’t simply view the home, the response was vague. It took nearly two weeks for them to relist, and the new asking price was £525,000. A full week passed without any communication. Then came a call recommending the price be dropped to £499,000. I was told this was “just a marketing tactic,” and that they still aimed to get me a sale within the original £510k–£535k range. But I struggled to understand how listing a property nearly £40,000 lower would achieve that. I asked again about the investors. They finally admitted the only offer received was the same £460k I'd declined weeks earlier through WeBuyAnyHouse. This was when the red flags really began to show. Why wasn’t I told this upfront? Why present an optimistic price range if their investor offer was fixed at £460k from the beginning? Why was I encouraged to pull the property from PurpleBricks if they intended to rely on the open market anyway? I could have just reduced the price there and avoided unnecessary costs and delays. Doing more research online, I found stories from others with eerily similar experiences. It appeared HSD’s real model was to attract sellers with high expectations and then drop the price, relying on open-market tactics to force a quick sale. Despite claiming not to charge commission, they would never clearly explain how they made their money. It seems they may be negotiating higher prices with buyers while offering sellers less—profiting off the gap. No transparency, no trust. Meanwhile, they knew I was paying a high mortgage on an empty property. It became clear they were hoping I’d become desperate enough to accept the same low £460k offer I had already rejected twice. In the four weeks my property was listed with them, only four viewings were arranged. Two were no-shows. Of the remaining two, one viewer stayed for just five minutes—asked no questions and didn’t even view all the rooms. It felt performative, not serious. As expected, neither viewer submitted an offer, despite supposedly being “pre-qualified and keen.” Eventually, I told HSD I wanted to withdraw the property. That’s when I was informed—shockingly—that I had unknowingly signed up for a 52-week contract, and I’d need to pay £1,500 to exit, or £999 if paid within 7 days. I wrote to them, acknowledged that they had done some work, and offered a reasonable £699 exit fee, explaining I needed to rent the home out due to financial strain. They refused and insisted on full payment. I paid the £999 immediately—but it still took a full week and several chasers before they finally removed the property from Rightmove. By the end of the ordeal, it was clear I was no longer a priority for them. In summary: Do I regret choosing HSD? Absolutely. Would I recommend them to someone looking for a fair, transparent, and professional house sale experience? No. If your only goal is to sell quickly and you don’t care about value, they might work for you. But if you want to sell your home at a decent price with a partner you can trust, I strongly advise staying away from HSD.

Picked up keys today and very happy with the purchase for the price I got it for - would 100% use them again for another purchase as they have a lot of good deals if you are looking to buy tenanted property.
